General practitioners (GPs) are the first point of contact for nearly all NHS patients.
Patients have the right to choose a GP practice, for most people this choice is currently limited to a practice near where they live.
Practices that have Open Lists should accept new patients who apply to register unless there are reasonable grounds for refusal. The rules for patient registration are set down in the GMS Regulations. Please contact the LMC offices for further information and guidance on this.
